I am on the leading edge of the baby boom generation. A position I enjoy with some pride. At each stage of their life, the needs and desires of the baby boomers have become the dominant concerns of American business and popular culture. Boomers are predicted to change the nature of aging years. Long before we arrive, we will have begun to envision and reshape popular habits, styles, and attitudes toward aging to accommodate our unique ideas and fancies.

First, however let’s get serious about the challenges of growing older in America not out of concern for ourselves, but also because we will witness and participate in our own parents struggling through the later stages of life. The members of the “Me generation” will become caregivers, parents to their own parents. As approximately 76 million of us experience this together, the challenge of how to relate to the aging of a loved one will become a powerful theme over the next several decades.
